Oregano

Oregano is a special herb, native to Europe, the Mediterranean Region, and southern and central Asia. It can grow and average of 60cm, and has purple flowers. It is usually used in Italian- American and Greek cuisines. It has an aromatic, warm, and slightly bitter taste. Some can be so strong that it numbs your tongue! Oregano is an antioxidant, which slows aging, due to high amounts of phenolic acids and flavanoids. Oregano is taken by mouth for the treatment of colds, influenza, mild fevers, indigestion, stomach upsets and painful menstruation. It is strongly sedative and should not be taken in large doses, though mild teas have a soothing effect and aid restful sleep. Seeing how healthy it was, Colonel Sanders decided to add this herb to his secret recipe. Yet, he ruins its health benefits by adding MSG.

MSG Accent

MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) Accent is a famous taste enhancer known all over the world. It was first commercially produced by a Japanse scientist in 1908 by the name of Kikunae Ikeda. He was always curious about why all chefs and cooks sprinkled a some sort seewead called Kombu. He took it to his labaratory and analyzed it, finding out that its taste was unami, meaning every taste. Therefore, whenever it is put on food, it will automatically intensify the natural flavors. Soon, he patented it, and sold it to the world. The U.S.A. first used MSG to make army rations taste better. Then, word got out about it to restaurants all over the States and all the fast- food companies started to use it. In 1940, KFC did too.
KFC sells a lot of chicken everyday. And if they do live up to their secret recipe promise, each piece of chicken will contain several herbs and spices. Therefore, to do that, it would cost a huge amount of money. So, KFC found a loophole; yes, all the pieces of chicken will contain those herbs and spices. But, there will only be a small amount placed on it yet it will taste like there is more because MSG Accent will be used to intesify the taste. That was a very great but evil idea about KFC.
MSG is the sodium salt of the amino acid glutamic acid and a form of glutamate. It is sold as a fine white crystal substance, similar in appearance to salt or sugar. MSG is so widely used, that people eat it almost everyday without noticing. The average intake of MSG per week by a person is 58 grams! Also, MSG is severe to those with pre-existing vascular disease, hypoglycemic patients, pregnant women, and people with renal or congestive heart failure. To 40% of average Americans, they react to MSG. Each reaction differs for it depends on the person's diet and physical activity. Usual reaction time is usualy 48 hours from consumption. Duration time varies. It causes headache, vomiting, diarrhea, heart rate change, stomach cramps, mood changes, fatigue, and dizziness. For some others, it causes difficulty in concentration, extreme mood swings, depression, difficulty with balance, sleep disturbances, convulsions, hyperactivity, esophageal reflux and heartburn, flushing of the skin, asthma, and swelling of the throat. MSG headaches are infamous for being more painful than a root canal. If you eat MSG often enough, you will become more and more used to it and the reactions will become minimal. Here is a picture of glutamic acid, a main ingredient of MSG Accent.

Basil

Native to Iran and India, basil is a herb growing in a tropical, humid, climate. It grows 30- 130cm tall, and small flowers and leaves. Basil is sold by seeds or leaves to be used to cook, to make drinks, and put in baths for cosmetics. Fresh basil taste pungent and strong, while dry basil taste like hay. Most of basil contains a chemical called eugenol, which gives basil its smell. It is rich in vitamin K, A, and iron. If taken often, it may even reduce to risk of cancer. Overall, basil is a healthy, good tasting, herb.

Chicken

Chicken is a domesticated fowl that originated from southeast Asia. It is a descendant of the wild red jungle fowl, until it was domesticated. Now, it has become an extremely popular food, due to the high population of chicken around the world. You must have heard the phrase, 'tastes like chicken,' meaning chicken is extremely well- known around the world. People eat chicken burgers, chicken fajitas, chicken fingers, and just plain chicken. Chicken eggs are also edible and rich in Omega 3. Chicken itself has a lot of vitamin B3, and is only around 240 calories! Depending on how you cook it, there is a chance that you can increase the amount of calories. KFC for example, cooks it with lots of oil, which blows the calories off the scale! Since chicken is so popular, Colonel Sanders decided to fry it. Therefore, we have Kentucky Fried Chicken, or KFC. Chicken is the most important ingredient in KFC Chicken.

Thyme

Thyme is a herb first used by the Greek in baths and incense, and Egyptians used it for embalming. The herb is cultivated and it is sold in sprigs. A sprig is a single stem snipped from the plant. It has a strong flavor, due to the amount of thymol in it. Thymol is used in cigarettes, to treat fungal spores, and also used in embalming. Thyme is usually used to flavor meats, soups, and stews. Apparently, it is a primary flavor with lamb. Thyme is also in Listerine mouthwash because it contains thymol. Tea with thyme is given to treat coughs. For other respiratory diseases, thyme is taken by steam inhalation. Luckily for KFC, it is an extremely healthy herb, rich in vitamin K and iron. Here is a picture of thymol.

Paprika

Paprika is a spice in Central and South America. It consists of dry red and green bell peppers grinded together to form a powder. It is used to add color and flavor to a dish, similar to MSG. It was only grown in Europe when Christopher Columbus brought some back from the Americas. It is used to season and colour rices, stews, soup, and to flavor sausages. The countries that produce the most paprika are India, China, Bangledesh, and Peru. The redder the paprika, the more hotter it taste. There are 8 types of paprika; Special Quality, Delicate, Exquisite, Pungent, Rose, Noble Sweet, Half- Sweet, and Hot. Each type has its own paticular taste and KFC Chicken most likely uses Rose paprika because it has a strong aroma and it does not taste hot. Paprika is high in vitamin C, but high heats, like frying, leaches the vitamin from the paprika. Since KFC puts all its chicken in high heat areas, most of the vitamins disappear from the chicken, making paprika neither a healthy nor unhealthy.

Conclusion

Although KFC contains many healthy herbs and spices, the amount is too small, and it is also dwarfed by the amount of unhealthy ingredients in KFC chicken. Sadly, this great tasting chicken is declared, UNHEALTHY
